Every three years library cards "expire". This just means that the library wants to verify your information (phone number, address, emails, etc.). When the library is open you may come in with your drivers license and staff will renew your card. If you are out of town and trying to check out digital material you can call the library at 616-772-0874 if no information has changed.
Here at the Howard Miller Public Library we use a service called Shoutbomb for library alerts. Shoutbomb allows patrons to see when their holds are ready, which holds are ready, and where to pick up the holds! You can also see which items are due in 3 days and which are overdue. This system also allows for renewal of books that are due in 3 days or less. Renewals might not always work for various reasons. If this happens please check the catalog or call us.

To check out materials at the Howard Miller Public Library, you library card must be present. You may use Self Checkout if you have your ID or have your card memorized. We are required to ask verifying information if you bring your library card up to the front desk.
The Howard Miller Public Library is a member of the Lakeland Library Cooperative. Borrowing privileges of your card extend beyond walls of this library to 82 area libraries. This means that you may visit other libraries within the cooperative to check out materials, or request that materials be sent to the Howard Miller Public Library for pick up. Names and addresses of libraries within the cooperative can be found at the Lakeland Library Cooperative website. PIN number is required to place items on hold.

There are many ways to renew your items!
Automatic renewal happens 3 days before your item is due. If your item is renewed it will show the new due date based on the original due date. So if your movie is due on April 4 and is automatically renewed it will now be due on April 11! If it is a book, it will be due on April 25. See below for an email example of an automatic renewal notification.
Most items can be renewed, but some, like our feature film DVDs and Express books, cannot.
In order to obtain a library card, you must currently be a resident of Zeeland City, Zeeland Township, Olive Township, or Blendon Township. We can also create cards for Herrick District Library in Holland. The requirements for children and adults are listed below:
Adults: Adults may obtain a library card if they present a valid Michigan Driver’s License or Michigan ID displaying their current address. You may also provide a piece of official mail/form showing current address. Official mail/forms would include a tax bill, a utility bill, voter registration, or printed check. Other forms of ID are acceptable if your address is listed. You must be over 18 to obtain an adult card.
Children: Parent or legal guardian of the child must have a valid Michigan Driver’s License or Michigan ID with a current address. The parent or guardian must be present to sign for the library card. People aged 16-17 still require a parent or guardian’s signature.
Student Cards: Children living in the Howard Miller Public Library service area who do not currently have a standard library card with a co-signer are eligible to apply for a limited use, student card without a co-signer provided. Child must be able to provide full home address, birthdate and phone number or email address. These cards only allow 3 print youth material checkouts. They have full access to Howard Miller Public Library’s digital collection. They can be upgraded to a full-use card with all privileges given to standard card holders with a co-signer signature at any time.
Non-residents: Non-residents may obtain a library card with a current Michigan Driver’s license/Michigan ID or proof of Michigan temporary residence. The fee for a non-resident is $50.00 per year (cash or check only). These non-resident cards are only valid through the Howard Miller Public Library.

Absolutely! The Library welcomes gifts of materials with the following guidelines:
1. The Library retains the right to dispose of all materials at its own discretion.
2. Materials must meet established selection criteria of the library.
3. Donated items should be in good condition. Donations to the library are valid Federal Income Tax Deduction.
However, please note the following points:
1. A form will serve as a receipt signed by library staff for donation.
2. The library cannot assume responsibility for valuing gifts.
3. In the event of a tax audit, the burden of proof for the claimed value of the donation rests with the donor.
Skates are available at the Howard Miller Public Library at 14 S. Church Street during regular business hours:

Adults, 18 years of age or older, are able to rent skates for themselves and for minor children. The adult must have either a Howard Miller Public Library card or a card from a Lakeland Library Cooperative library and must complete a liability waiver for each skater in order to borrow ice skates through this program.
Free! There is no charge to rent the ice skates.
RBdigital has acquired OverDrive, but they realized that the Libby app is more user friendly than the RBdigital app. The company decided that it would be easier on everyone to move their materials onto the Libby platform. For the Lakeland Library Cooperative, this transition is occurring at 8 AM on Wednesday, October 21, 2020.

The magazines will be moved to OverDrive/Libby in 2021. Be on the lookout for more information as we get closer to the new year.
Current checkouts will be available through the remainder of their lending period in the RBdigital app. Current checkouts will not be moved to OverDrive. This will allow users to finish their title without disruption or risk of losing their place in the book.
Holds will not be moved to OverDrive. You can export their Transaction History from the RBdigital websites by accessing My Account > Profiles. You could also write down the titles you have on hold. You can place holds on those titles again in Libby.
Wish lists will not be moved to OverDrive/Libby. You can export their Transaction History from the RBdigital websites by accessing My Account > Profiles or by writing down your wishlist. You can recreate their wish list in Libby using Tags.
Checkout history will not be moved to OverDrive. However, you’ll be able to mark titles you’ve already read using Tags in Libby. You can export their Transaction History from the RBdigital websites by accessing My Account > Profiles.
Libby won’t have a record of the titles that you listened or read on the RBdigital app, but it does keep track of your previous checkouts on the Libby app. Each title will have a record of your interaction (date placed on hold, date checked out, date returned).
Eventually the downloadable magazines will be moved to OverDrive/Libby. This is scheduled for January 2021. Be on the lookout for more information as we get closer to the new year!
We are offering curbside pickup currently but there are differences:
We cannot accept returns via curbside. We cannot hand you your items. You might not be able to use the curbside parking space, but any parking spot on Church St. is ok.
If you are the parent of a minor then absolutely!
You cannot use this service to pick up your spouse/sibling/parent/adult child. You may pick up their holds at the front desk and check them out using self checkout (their PIN # will be required for this).
Mobile Hotspots should be picked up at the front desk, but we can bring the paperwork out to your car if you are uncomfortable coming in the building due to COVID concerns.
Other items in our collection cannot be placed on hold so cannot be picked up with this service:

You can! Placing a book club kit on hold is different from other items so we recommend that you here for more information.
We are currently allowed to host up to 100 people at any given time.
Yes, we encourage you to bring your kids with you to the library. There are no limits on how many people within a family can enter the library at any given time.
We have 8 public computers available for the public to use. All computer stations are adequately spaced to allow for social distancing. Due to demand for this resource, patrons will be given 1 hour each day to use the computers. If someone needs additional time to apply for a job, gain access to local, state and federal assistance or other vital uses, library staff will be able to allow more computer time on a case by case basis. All gaming on public computers will be suspended during this phase of our re-opening.
Yes, guests will be able to access books and other library materials within the children’s area of the library. During this phase of our re-opening, children’s computers, toys and other objects have been removed to mitigate the spread of the virus. Fun on the Run packs are also not available at this time.
For all in-person library visits, all patrons over the age of 2 will need to wear a mask. If you don’t wish to wear a mask or are unable to do so, our staff is happy to provide you holds pick-up service in the building lobby or curbside. Thanks in advance for helping us keep our staff healthy and able to provide service to the community.
According to guidance from the CDC and initial results from a scientific study testing the time it takes for the virus to be undetectable on library materials of various compositions, we are placing all library materials in quarantine for 4 business days before handling them. All materials being sent to and coming from other libraries are also quarantined for 4 days at both locations before handling. Please allow a minimum of 1 week for items to be checked in after return and 2 weeks for items to arrive from other libraries.
There are areas available to read materials in the library while remaining socially distanced from other guests. We are asking that you use hand sanitizer before and after reading magazines and newspapers in the library to mitigate the spread of the virus.
Our study rooms are currently unavailable. We don’t anticipate being able to open them until after the virus is controlled. There are tables with single chairs throughout the library for those who need a quiet place to study.
We will have programming; however, it will be virtual for the remainder of the summer and through the end of the year. Be sure to subscribe to our You Tube channel to get the latest programming and like our Facebook page for additional programming ideas and opportunities.
Summer reading ended August 8th. You can still use our Beanstack app to track your books and log minutes for your family if you would like!
Our library definitely looks and feels different right now. Before the pandemic, we encouraged community members to linger and gather for as long as they like. Ultimately, our goal is to return to building a social, community-building environment; however, until the virus is contained, we are encouraging everyone to think of the library as a grocery store environment. Find the materials and information you need and enjoy them at home.
Thanks for your generous offer of donated books. Unfortunately, due to the coronavirus and the steps we must take to ensure books are not carrying the virus, we don’t have the capacity to accept book donations at this time. There are a few places in the Holland/Zeeland area accepting donations. Again, we appreciate your generous offer and continued support.

After the Initial Inspection, the property owner is given at least thirty days to make all of the required corrections prior to the Re-Inspection. Once all of the corrections have been made, and all of the documentation and fees have been submitted, a Rental Certificate of Compliance may be issued to you.
